Tokio Hotel preps another assault on American cities

Glam-rockers Tokio Hotel [ tickets ] have announced dates for a summer headlining run through North America behind the band's English-language debut, "Scream."

The German quartet--lead singer Bill Kaulitz, guitarist Tom Kaulitz, drummer Gustav Schafer and bassist Georg Listing--is making another attempt on American markets this year after canceling its spring tour following an injury to Kaulitz's vocal chords (and subsequent surgery to remove a cyst).

The group will kick off the upcoming run Aug. 7 in Sayreville, NJ, and plans to visit 11 cities on the trek, which runs through late August. Details are below.

"Scream," released May 6 in the United States, contains English versions of songs from the band's previous German-language albums, 2005's "Schrei" and last year's "Zimmer 483." Although the new album--which is sold as "Room 483" in German-speaking territories, the English translation of "Zimmer 483"--has performed well in Europe, selling more than 600,000 copies to date, the band has struggled to gain popular success in the US, although the group has attracted a ground swelling of support due to its theatrical live act.

Formed in Magdeburg, Germany in 2001, Tokio Hotel [ tickets ] has scored four No. 1 singles and two No. 1 albums in its native Germany, and has sold more than 3 million CDs and DVDs combined, according to a press release.

Bill bastelt fleißig an neuen Songs

2007 veröffentlichten „Tokio Hotel“, die momentan erfolgreichste Band Deutschlands, ihre letzte Platte („Zimmer 483“). Seither ist es in Sachen neue Songs eher still um die vier Magdeburger Jungs. Stattdessen sorgten Bills Stimmband-OP und der Erfolg im Ausland für umso mehr Wirbel. Damit soll jetzt Schluss sein, schließlich ist ein neues Album in Planung!

Nach seiner Kehlkopf-OP wurde „Tokio-Hotel“-Frontmann Bill Kaulitz von seinen Ärzten zu vier Wochen Schweigen verdonnert. Eine harte Zeit für den Sänger! Doch sie hatte auch etwas Gutes! Denn seitdem schreibt Bill täglich an neuen Songs für das dritte „Tokio-Hotel“-Album.

„Bill kommt momentan andauernd mit neuen Songideen auf mich zu“, sagt der Band-Manager und Produzent David Jost zu BILD.de. Jede wichtige Text-Idee werde sofort auf Hotelzetteln oder im Laptop notiert, richtig viel Material habe Bill so schon gesammelt. „Und je nachdem, wo er sich gerade befindet, schreibt er eine Textzeile auch einfach erst mal kurz in sein Telefon."

Die Zeit vor, während und nach der OP inspirierte den Sänger ebenso wie die vielen neuen Auslandseindrücke in den USA, Frankreich und Spanien. „Ich glaube bei Bill ist das Songschreiben oft 'ne Mischung aus Heimweh und Fernweh. Der wünscht sich, irgendwo zu Hause zu sein und gleichzeitig will er immer weiter", sagt Jost über Bills Ideen.

Wann die Produktion des dritten „Tokio-Hotel“-Albums beginnt, steht noch nicht fest. Was sagt die Plattenfirma dazu?

„Na klar machen die Druck, aber davon dürfen wir uns nicht beeinflussen lassen. Wir wären ja schön blöd, wenn wir da jetzt mal eben einen Schnellschuss hinlegen würden, nur um ein Timing zu halten", so Jost.

Klar ist: Bill bleibt seiner Muttersprache treu und singt wieder auf Deutsch!

Nachdem „Tokio Hotel“ im Ausland groß gefeiert werden, war ein englischsprachiges Album nicht auszuschließen. Dazu David Jost: „Die Fans wollen so nah wie möglich an die Identität von Bill ran. Deswegen möchten sie die Texte auf deutsch verstehen…“
